Vegetable-tanned leather: what makes it different?

Genuine leather tanned with plant-based tannins, such as tannic acid, is called vegetable-tanned leather. Tannins are obtained from oak, willow or birch bark. The process of tanning leather with plant tannins consists of soaking the leather in plant extracts. The main advantages of vegetable-tanned leather are, above all, good suppleness, water resistance, good thermal insulation and a lower risk of micro-organisms. Vegetable-tanned leather is processed without the use of harmful chemicals. This type of leather is known for its uneven (and therefore interesting) colour and texture. Due to the natural ageing of the material, the bag may look slightly different over time. An important aspect is the care of vegetable-tanned leather – use only beeswax-based products.
